If the force and the displacement are in the same direction, then positive work is done on the object. The work that is done can be positive work or negative work depending on whether the force doing the work is directed opposite the object's motion or in the same direction as the object's motion. When work is done by external forces (nonconservative forces), the total mechanical energy of the object is altered. Because internal forces are capable of changing the form of energy without changing the total amount of mechanical energy, they are sometimes referred to as conservative forces. When the only forces doing work are internal forces, energy changes forms - from kinetic to potential (or vice versa) yet the total amount of mechanical is conserved. ![]() This is referred to as energy conservation and will be discussed in detail later in this lesson. Yet, the sum of the kinetic and potential energies remains constant. For example, as an object is "forced" from a high elevation to a lower elevation by gravity, some of the potential energy of that object is transformed into kinetic energy. In such cases, the object's energy changes form. When the only type of force doing net work upon an object is an internal force (for example, gravitational and spring forces), the total mechanical energy (KE + PE) of that object remains constant. Because external forces are capable of changing the total mechanical energy of an object, they are sometimes referred to as nonconservative forces. This principle will be discussed in great detail later in this lesson. Under such circumstances, the work that is done will be equal to the change in mechanical energy of the object. The gain or loss in energy can be in the form of potential energy, kinetic energy, or both. If the work is negative work, then the object will lose energy. If the work is positive work, then the object will gain energy. When net work is done upon an object by an external force, the total mechanical energy (KE + PE) of that object is changed. ![]() The importance of categorizing a force as being either internal or external is related to the ability of that type of force to change an object's total mechanical energy when it does work upon an object. While this is a simplistic approach, it is an approach that will serve us well in our introduction to physics. And for our purposes, the internal forces include the gravity forces, magnetic force, electrical force, and spring force. For our purposes, we will simply say that external forces include the applied force, normal force, tension force, friction force, and air resistance force. Many of these ways are commonly discussed at great length in physics textbooks - particularly college-level physics textbooks. There are many sophisticated and worthy ways of explaining and distinguishing between internal and external forces. What Does Work Do?įorces can be categorized as internal forces or external forces. The two categories of forces are referred to as internal forces and external forces. And there are other types of forces that can never change the total mechanical energy of an object, but rather can only transform the energy of an object from potential energy to kinetic energy (or vice versa). We will learn that there are certain types of forces, that when present and when involved in doing work on objects will change the total mechanical energy of the object. In this lesson, we will learn how to categorize forces based upon whether or not their presence is capable of changing an object's total m echanical energy. The force of gravity, electrical forces, and magnetic forces were examples of forces that could exist between two objects even when they are not physically touching. Whether a force was categorized as an action-at-a-distance force was dependent upon whether or not that type of force could exist even when the objects were not physically touching. In a previous unit, it was mentioned that all the types of forces could be categorized as contact forces or as action-at-a-distance forces. There are a variety of ways to categorize all the types of forces.

Much of that information is accessible through the Ingress website, which houses a gigantic global intel map pointing to notable spots around the world, as well as more Ingress-specific data. Niantic told us that this data has been "touched up" for Pokémon Go, but at launch, players have four years of Ingress data to scrape through. That's why Pokémon Go already knows the coolest places for you to check out in your local area, accompanied with photos. Major players of the earlier game contributed location data, or intel, to an online database, populating a worldwide map with various notable locations. But how do you know where these PokéStops are in the rest of the world so that you can plan your travel accordingly? It turns out, Ingress plays a huge role in figuring that out. But while Zucchi did make some new discoveries with his telescope it didn’t work well and was difficult to make and to use. Zucchi created his first reflector around 1616 while Newton completed his first (and famous) telescope in 1670. He published a book on Optics in the 1650’s and it is this book that inspired Sir Isaac Newton to build his own telescope. Credit for making the first reflector goes to and Italian Monk, Physicist, and Astronomer named Niccolo Zucchi. It is commonly thought that Newton invented the first reflector telescope but it isn’t true. This way you can build much larger mirrors without any distortion. And because you only need to bounce light off the surface you can place the whole mirror on a supporting structure or base which takes a lot of the weight off the mirror. It simply bounces all the light off the surface. Newton’s telescope solved these problems. When a lens gets to be really large it gets very heavy and its own weight will distort the lens and ruin the image. Today we can make lenses that have almost no chromatic aberration but we can’t make them very large. In the time of Newton glass making and lens making was very primitive and the problems of chromatic aberration were not yet overcome. This is called chromatic aberration and it gives us distorted views of what we see through a lens. When light passes through glass the different bands (or colors) pass through at different angles and this causes aberrations or problems in the images. If you are familiar with a prism or a rainbow you can understand why reflectors are superior to refractors. Why a reflector is better than a refractor There are currently several reflector type scopes that are over four hundred inches in diameter. The largest refractor telescope in the world is forty inches in diameter and reflector telescopes dwarf this in comparison. Reflector telescopes, because they are easier to make and can be made in sizes much larger than refractors, are an invention that changed astronomy and our understanding of the universe. This article looks at his famous reflector telescope and describes some of his discoveries.Ī reflector telescope is one that uses a mirror rather than lenses to bend light and magnify images. There is a lot of validity to this claim. Sir Isaac Newton is often considered as the greatest Astronomer and Mathematician to ever live. Sir Isaac Newton didn’t use his telescope to find any new things in the universe but he did use it to radically transform how we view the world we live in and the universe as a whole. ![]() Pyglet is a ctypes wrapper around native system. ![]() > winsound.PlaySound("SystemExit", winsound. Nonetheless, belief in Satan has persisted, particularly in the Americas.Īlthough Satan is generally viewed as evil, some groups have very different beliefs. During the Age of Enlightenment, belief in the existence of Satan was harshly criticized by thinkers such as Voltaire. During the early modern period, Satan's significance greatly increased as beliefs such as demonic possession and witchcraft became more prevalent. In the Middle Ages, Satan played a minimal role in Christian theology and was used as a comic relief figure in mystery plays. He is later bound for one thousand years, but is briefly set free before being ultimately defeated and cast into the Lake of Fire. In the Book of Revelation, Satan appears as a Great Red Dragon, who is defeated by Michael the Archangel and cast down from Heaven. In the Synoptic Gospels, Satan tempts Jesus in the desert and is identified as the cause of illness and temptation. In the apocryphal Book of Jubilees, Yahweh grants the satan (referred to as Mastema) authority over a group of fallen angels, or their offspring, to tempt humans to sin and punish them.Īlthough the Book of Genesis does not mention him, Christians often identify the serpent in the Garden of Eden as Satan. During the intertestamental period, possibly due to influence from the Zoroastrian figure of Angra Mainyu, the satan developed into a malevolent entity with abhorrent qualities in dualistic opposition to God. In the Quran, Shaitan, also known as Iblis, is an entity made of fire who was cast out of Heaven because he refused to bow before the newly created Adam and incites humans to sin by infecting their minds with waswās ("evil suggestions").Ī figure known as ha-satan ("the satan") first appears in the Hebrew Bible as a heavenly prosecutor, subordinate to Yahweh (God), who prosecutes the nation of Judah in the heavenly court and tests the loyalty of Yahweh's followers. In Christianity and Islam, he is usually seen as a fallen angel or jinn who has rebelled against God, who nevertheless allows him temporary power over the fallen world and a host of demons. In Judaism, Satan is seen as an agent subservient to God, typically regarded as a metaphor for the yetzer hara, or "evil inclination". Unlike in classical liberalism, the market would be treated not as a natural and separate sphere but ‘as the principle, form, and model’ for the state (Foucault 2010: 117). Those committed to Hayek’s vision felt that to avoid repeating historical failures, a different relationship between state and market should be engineered. These approaches had gained momentum in response to the Great Depression and declining faith in classical liberalism, which relied on the assumption that the market was capable of regulating itself, a conceit troubled by economic crisis (Coleman 2013: 82). While there was disagreement amongst attendees about the precise form that this ‘new’ liberalism should take, most were critical of the rise of the welfare state and Keynesian economic doctrine, which encouraged state intervention and spending to boost economic growth (Slobodian 2018: 6). Its contemporary use was consolidated by the inaugural 1947 gathering of the Mont Pèlerin Society, organised by Friedrich Hayek, and attended by prominent economists and thinkers such as Milton Friedman, George Stigler, and Karl Popper (Harvey 2007, Coleman 2013, Mirowski & Plehwe 2015, Slobodian 2018). It concludes by setting out ongoing debates about the use of neoliberalism and related concepts proposed to think critically about contemporary capitalism.Īs an economic philosophical movement, neoliberalism refers to the form of liberalism resurgent after the Second World War. In order to demonstrate as much, this entry highlights insights about the effects of neoliberalism on the state and on labour. Third, it addresses how the intersections between these two approaches have been productive for anthropologists. Second, this entry presents work that frames neoliberalism less as a unified system and more as a flexible mode of governing, and the influence of the work of Michel Foucault on this body of literature. First, it examines contributions that have treated neoliberalism as a world system, and the influence of Marxist concepts on this approach. This entry starts by exploring the benefits and drawbacks of two different ways of theorising neoliberalism. They have at times used the word as a neutral description of an economic doctrine or set of related policies, and at others as a normative description of their negative effects. Anthropologists have critically engaged with neoliberalism. In practice, it is characterised by the retrenchment of the welfare state and an increased role of the state in preserving market competition. It refers to a form of capitalism ascendant since the 1970s but informed by post-war economic philosophical ideas. ![]() ![]() ‘Neoliberalism’ is a widely used term that travelled from economic philosophy into policymaking, and from policymaking into critical social scientific discourse in the late twentieth century. ![]() Photographed by industry veteran Norman Seeff (who snagged shots of everyone from The Rolling Stones to James Taylor to Rufus & Chaka Khan), "Hejira" shows Mitchell with a beret on her head and a cigarette in her hand, a lonesome road projected across her body while she is imprinted onto an image of a snowstorm-struck country field (which in real life is Lake Mendota in Madison, Wisconsin). "Hejira," her eighth studio album, remains an accessible, fascinating journey into her changing aesthetic, anchored by great songs like the single "Coyote" and one of her all-time best album tracks with "Furry Sings the Blues." Yet this album cover is the best of her entire career, hands down. Yet as the '70s bore on, Mitchell became increasingly fascinated with jazz and began integrating it to her sound to varying degrees of commercial and critical success. Joni Mitchell's discography is littered with classic albums, with 1971's "Blue" and 1974's "Court and Spark" frequently coming to mind upon first mention. It's simple to the point of genius and helped color the perceptions of the tens of millions of people who bought it, eventually going down as one of the best-selling records of all time. While Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell (who later formed the design firm Hipgnosis) had been long-standing Floyd collaborators, the band insisted that something "simple" be done for its eighth LP, "The Dark Side of the Moon." Initially frustrated but soon later overcoming the challenge, the simple prism graphic conceived of for the cover told you everything you needed to know about the psychedelic experience waiting for you inside. While he is known for doing the designs for Peter Gabriel's early solo LPs, Ween's "The Mollusk" and artists like Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin, The Mars Volta and Genesis, he is still best known and remembered as the man who gave Pink Floyd its distinct visual identity. For the uninitiated, Thorgerson had his hand in record covers that were both eye-catching and unapologetically Thorgerson. One can't talk about iconic album covers without talking about Pink Floyd, and if we're talking about Pink Floyd, we're talking about Storm Thorgerson. Transgressive at the time, the cover of "Sticky Fingers" pushed the limits of what was acceptable for record releases and, despite some protest, actually got away with it. Retailers and consumers began complaining, meetings were held as to how to solve it, and then someone came up with the genius idea of.just unzipping the records before they were stacked. The only problem? When the vinyls laid on top of each other, the zipper was puncturing the vinyl on the album right above it. In fact, this cover was so assured to be the talk of the town that a real-life zipper was crafted onto the sleeves of the initial release. Sleazy and intriguing at the same time, this ambitious, progressive cover was conceived by Andy Warhol, lensed by Billy Name and designed by Craig Braun. While "Sticky Fingers" is notable for featuring the first use of the iconic "tongue and lips" logo for Rolling Stones Records (the label the band established after their contract with Decca ended), that cover image was, to many at the time, downright shocking - albeit a perfect representation of the Stones at the peak of their powers. Country? Heavy metal? Reggae? Nothing was off limits, and this cover, so deceptively simple, advertised that there were no limits to what lies beneath. Pepper's" alluded to a psychedelic panoply of songs, the blank canvas the Fab Four provided us for this epic meant that they could truly traverse into any subgenre they wanted, often inventing new ones along the way. What's more, this self-titled record (only later dubbed "The White Album" for.obvious reasons) was weirdly evocative of the music contained within. With the band's name in Helvetica and ever-so-slightly off alignment, this album cover, so dismissed as a joke upon first reveal, showed that the Beatles, at the height of their powers, could truly do anything. While various artworks were commissioned for the band's ninth studio effort, it was Richard Hamilton who effectively convinced Paul McCartney and the rest of the fellas to pull off this daring middle-finger moment to the music world, having gone from colorful extravagance to stark, striking minimalism.
